WESTWOOD HAPPY ABOUT STRONG BRITISH MASTERS LINE UP

The 2017 host of the British Masters Lee Westwood says he is impressed with the “incredible” field at this year’s event.

The event is set to kick off at Close House on Thursday with multiple big names slated to feature.

Masters winner Sergio Garcia and stars like Rory McIlroy, Alex Noren and others are set to partake in the competition.

“It’s an incredible field really, it’s never easy to find the right date for a lot of the lads to come but Sergio and Rory and many others [are coming]. It’s had great support from the British and European players, I couldn’t have asked for a better field,” the happy host said.

Westwood won the event in 2007 at The Belfry and he is contented with the consistent growth of the tournament till date. He says the British Masters is “a very prestigious title to win” and that top golfers have it on their schedule early when planning for the year.
“It’s always been played on great golf courses. It slipped right back into the schedule really nicely, I think it’s found a good date,” he added.

Westwood praised the success last year and adds that he expects similar numbers if not more this year as well. Swede star Noren won the event last year at The Grove in Hertfordshire. The British crowd is expected to remain an enthusiastic one. Westwood opines that the “load of people” that turn up for the event would make a great atmosphere and buzz for the event.

On his chances this year, the host says he it would be nice if he won and that he would try hard. However, he admits that it would be “a hard tournament to win” as the winner must have played greatly.

Rory McIlroy Slips Down Leaderboard Struggle To Regain Title

Rory McIlroy, the champion mixed the bad, the good and the downright ugly at the Dell Technologies Championship an eventful opening round at TPC Boston yesterday.

McIlroy, trying to win his first year’s tournament, had to settle for a one-over-par 72. This left him six shots back from the leader of clubhouse Dustin Johnson who shot 66.

The Northern Irishman spoke about this on Thursday, he spoke about his optimism about coming back to the course on which he tasted the victory in the year 2012 and 2016.
Just after a month, separating from caddie JP Fitzgerald, he said he is jovial and happier, more out there, and not getting as hard on himself.
And for some time, he seemed in the mood to follow the target that was set earlier by the Johnson.

On holes five and six, a brace of birdies, which latter, he holed a putt from 50 feet for a three, made him to bounce back.

McIlroy gave a shot back to the course on the seventh with a bogey six, after taking out of position from the tee-shot, which he made.

However, Rory was at minus-one still when he came to the 11th hole the 213-yard par-three and produced a real shocker by taking four putts from 12 feet after making his ball to land safely on the green.

McIlroy’s first putt was terrible, as he hit the ball four feet past the cup.

Then he tried to slot the ball home for par, but that also missed, which left him a three-footer for bogey, at last McIlroy was unable to hit the target. And that turned out as depressing for Rory.

McIlroy Early Exit At Match Play

The tournament Dell Technologies Match Play was not good for the Rory Mcllroy.

The champion of four-time (major) from Northern Ireland lost the match in the opening round itself. The chances of getting back into the game, also got over when Gary Woodland withdrew his name from the group later after a day. Woodland described the matter as personal and withdraws his name from the group. The move of Woodland ensured two things, first the exit of Mcllroy from the event and seconds the winning of Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen.

You must be thinking about the second finish, let’s have a complete look at match for details.

On the opening day of the event, Argentina’s player Emiliano Grillo was teed off by McIlroy. And both the players flapped their way around the Austin Country Club. And that was all for a pointless 18 holes.

After the exit from the game, McIlroy said “Both I and Emiliano are alike, so, what do we do? Moving up at 18, half could have been called by us, but it does not bother us. What I believe was our fault, we took the first match casually and we didn’t win it. If the format of the game was the old one, then I would have been out of the event before this.”

Though, McIlroy is out of the event, but he has no disappointment for that. After all, he knows what he did in the match. According to the resources, the player has not changed his plan to skip the Houston Open. He will participate in other majors and will look into the mistakes that he have made in this event. However, different players have different comments on this move of McIlroy. Some want McIlroy to play Houston and some say skipping it is a good idea.

RORY MCILROY MAKES SKYSPORTS GOLFER OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST

The golfing schedule for 2016 has seen quite a lot of action in the campaign and is slowly drawing to an end.

SkySports has taken advantage of that to draw up a shortlist of potential contenders that could clinch the coveted title of player of the year.

The first on the list is Henrik Stenson, who in 2013, had won the Race to Dubai title and an Olympic Silver medal as well. Stenson, 40 years old, posted a total of 12 worldwide top-10s. The BMW International Open, saw him ease to victory, some three weeks before he went on to claim a historic three shot win at The Open.

In a final round tussle at the Rio Olympics with Justin Rose, his Ryder Cup team mate, Stenson was narrowly beaten before his climb to the top as European’s No 1 was helped by a runner-up finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions.

Another invaluable golfer on the list is Alex Noren, Swedish counterpart and ninth in the World rankings. The 2016 schedule has seen him win more silverware that any other players in the European Tour.

In the space of 11 tournaments, he has gotten to the winner’s circle four times. After missing the cut at the US open, Noren fell in the world’s top ranking, below 100. He however, responded with success at the European Masters and the Scottish Open.

The third on the list is Rory McIlroy, who has for a fourth time in five years, been unable to win the Race to Dubai where he ended in the fifth position. However, he won the highest earnings of his career in this year

McIlroy secured victory in the Irish Open on home soil, with a stunning final-hole eagle. Also, at the PGA tour, a 16 month winless run for McIlroy was finally ended when he sent home a two-shot win at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Paul Casey being kept out of Hazeltine triggers the challenge that Rory put in. The eligibility ruling pertained to the Ryder Cup selections. As per Rory’s words, they as gatekeepers for the Tour, they need to ensure that the players should want to play for the experience, course as well as the purse. Rory McIlroy to skip Masters Par-3 Contest to avoid distraction

Rory McIlroy will hop the Masters Par-3 Contest in the coming week in the expectations that it would serve him end off the career Grand Slam at the Augusta National.

Speaking to several media houses, he told that he is not going to play the Par-3 Contest in 2016 as this is just too much dogfight and this is a bit of a beguilement.

Rory, who has played in Masters a total of 7 times with a 4th spot finish previous year his best result, missed the pre-tournament event just only one time. In that year, i.e.in 2011, Northern Irishman went to the back 9 on Sunday in the search for that green jacket, just to fall into a tie for fifteenth after a final-round 80.

He showed that break down as the reason he reuturn in his next major, the U.S. Open 2011, just to claim his 1st Grand Slam win at the Congressional Country Club.

At the Par-3 event in the year 2015, Rory made waves when he had Niall Horan, One Direction star, caddy for him. The year before that, Rory’s former fiancée, Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, caddied for him.

Since the inception of Par-3 Contest in the year 1960, no one has ever won this and the Masters in that very same year.

Kim was twenty-three, McIlroy nineteen and Ryo Ishikawa seventeen, and the media loved the storylines. In Round One, however, there was not a lot to write about. Rory shot 72, Ishikawa 74 and Anthony a 75 that included 5 bogeys against just 2 birdies.
